Privacy
We keep as little about you as the service needs to work. This page lists what that is.
What the server stores
- Your account. Your username, and your password as a salted SCRAM hash — never in plain text.
- Your email address, only if you chose to give one.
- Your contact list and settings, so every device you sign in from sees the same ones.
- Messages sent while you are offline, until you reconnect and receive them.
- A message archive, so your devices stay in sync. Archived messages are deleted automatically after 14 days.
- Files you share through your client, so the people you send them to can download them.
Encryption
Every connection to the server uses TLS 1.2 or newer. We strongly recommend turning on OMEMO end-to-end encryption whenever your client supports it. With it on, the server only relays messages it cannot read.
